Meet Laura Roberts – Your AI HR Interview Agent
Why HR Needs a New Approach
Recruitment remains one of the most resource-intensive activities inside any organisation. Human recruiters are expected to screen thousands of candidates, extract meaningful insights from short conversations, and make high-stakes decisions under time pressure.
But what if a voice-based AI agent could handle the first stage of candidate interviews – asking structured, consistent questions, engaging naturally with applicants, and delivering cleaner insights for recruiters to act on?
At AgenticScale.ai, we’ve built exactly that. We call her Laura Roberts, our dedicated HR AI Agent designed for professional recruitment teams.
And crucially, this is not just a marketing idea. A major field experiment, recently conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago and Erasmus University Rotterdam, has already proven the power of AI voice agents in recruitment. This large-scale study, titled “Voice AI in Firms: A Natural Field Experiment on Automated Job Interviews” (Jabarian & Henkel, 2025), gives us hard evidence that AI interviews are not only feasible – they actually deliver better results than human recruiters in key metrics.
Laura embodies these findings and brings them into practice for HR professionals today.
The Research That Changes Recruitment
The study in question partnered with PSG Global Solutions, a recruitment process outsourcing firm within Teleperformance, to run a natural field experiment.
Here are the headline details:
-
Sample size
Over 70,000 applicants across 48 job postings and 43 client accounts.
-
Treatment groups
Applicants were randomly assigned to (i) a human recruiter, (ii) an AI voice agent interviewer, or (iii) a choice between the two.
-
Decision making
In all cases, final hiring decisions were still made by human recruiters after reviewing transcripts and test scores.
The results were striking:
+12% increase in job offers
Applicants interviewed by AI were more likely to receive an offer (9.73% vs 8.70% for human recruiters).
+18% increase in job starts
Those interviewed by AI were more likely to actually start work.
+17% improvement in 30-day retention
Candidates interviewed by AI were more likely to still be employed a month later.
These are not marginal differences – they show that AI voice agents materially improve hiring outcomes.
Why Did AI Outperform Humans?
The researchers identify three main reasons.
-
AI interviews covered more ground and elicited more hiring-relevant details:
“AI-led interviews are much more likely to cover a very high number of topics (≥10) than human-led interviews: 50% versus 25%, respectively”.
Linguistic analysis showed that applicants’ responses in AI interviews had higher vocabulary richness and syntactic complexity – both strong predictors of job offers.
In short, AI interviews encouraged candidates to say more of the right things.
-
Recruiters reviewing AI transcripts consistently gave higher ratings:
“On average, applicants receive a score of 1.90 in the Human Interviewer condition and a score of 2.01 in AI Interviewer, a significant difference”.
Recruiter comments on AI-led interviews also skewed more positive (31% positive sentiment vs 24% for human-led).
AI created a better-packaged candidate story, making recruiters more confident.
-
One fear is that candidates would dislike being interviewed by AI. But the study found:
Acceptance of job offers was virtually identical (92.14% AI vs 93.64% human).
Net Promoter Score (likelihood of recommending the firm) was also the same.
Interestingly, reports of gender-based discrimination were nearly halved: 3.3% under AI vs 5.98% under humans.
Far from alienating candidates, AI maintained (and in some respects improved) the experience.

Benefits for HR Teams
-
Efficiency and Cost Savings
Recruiters spend much of their time on repetitive first-round interviews. Laura takes this load, allowing human recruiters to focus on higher-value evaluation and relationship-building.
The research paper also models costs, showing that AI interviews become significantly cheaper per interview once scaled – breaking even after just a few thousand interviews.
-
Improved Hiring Outcomes
Laura isn’t just efficient – she helps you hire better candidates.
The experiment showed that AI interviews produced employees who were more likely to accept offers, start jobs, and stay longer . For HR, that means reduced churn, lower replacement costs, and stronger long-term retention.
-
Fairer, More Consistent Interviews
Human bias in interviews is a long-standing challenge. The fact that perceived gender discrimination dropped by nearly half under AI is a powerful indicator that structured, unbiased questioning helps level the playing field.
-
Candidate Satisfaction Maintained
Despite fears of “robotic” interviews, the research shows that applicants were just as happy with AI as with humans . With Laura, candidates get a consistent, fair, and clear experience.
